Hornet Mimic Hoverfly (Volucella zonaria)

Hornet Mimic Hoverfly (Volucella zonaria) photographed by Keith Noble. This hoverfly is a Hornet mimic whose grubs live as scavengers in wasp and Hornet nests. A striking and distinctive insect which has been spreading north and west. Only the third record BIS have for this rare hoverfly.
